The term “unpacking the standards” gives the sense that we are opening this never-known-before “new gift” that contains the magic pill to solve all curriculum issues. I would argue that what the CCSS and the NGSS offer is not something substantially new, but rather the integral and important piece in making learning and teaching move beyond traditional “two-dimensional” teaching that is content-based, to a more conceptually focused three-dimensional approach (Erickson, 2008). Few would argue that in essence, this is what effective learning and teaching is all about. And meeting the standards does not mean one has to discard all current practices and start new, but rather facilitate the necessary scaffolding to move from content-based teaching to student-centered conceptually engaging learning.
Through a concept-based approach to curriculum and instruction (drawing on the work of Dr. Lois Lanning and Dr. Lynn Erickson), this series of workshops will provide classroom teachers the essential understandings, skills, strategies and resources in moving student understanding from factual to conceptual levels and thereby meeting the CCSS and the NGSS with intellectual integrity.
